Rising Damp

An example of Rising Damp in a residential property

What is Rising Damp?

Rising Damp occurs when ground moisture travels up through walls, often due to the absence or failure of a damp-proof course (DPC).

Causes of Rising Damp

Factors contributing to rising damp include:

  • No Damp Proof Course (DPC): Older buildings may lack a DPC, making them more prone to moisture ingress.
  • Deteriorated DPC: Over time, DPCs can degrade, allowing moisture to rise.
  • Bridging: Soil, debris, or raised ground levels can bypass the DPC.
  • High Groundwater Levels: Buildings in high groundwater areas are more susceptible.
  • Poor Landscaping: Incorrect landscaping can direct water towards the building.

Rising Damp Treatments

Chemical Damp-Proofing
Injecting a damp-proofing cream or fluid creates a new barrier that prevents moisture from rising while allowing the wall to breathe.

Electro-osmotic Systems
Using electric charges to repel moisture from walls, directing it back into the ground.

Installing a Physical DPC
Cutting into the wall to insert a new barrier, such as plastic or bitumen. Improving drainage and ground levels Ensuring proper drainage and lowering ground levels to reduce moisture exposure.

Clearing Air Vents and Cavities
Regularly inspect and clear blockages to prevent water from bridging gaps in walls.

Replastering and Decoration
Replace damaged plaster with salt-resistant, breathable plaster to keep walls dry.

Rising Damp Treatments Summary

  • Remove affected wall coverings (plaster, cladding, paint or wall paper).
  • Install new DPC or DPM.
  • Carry out remedial work using breathable, specialist materials.

Additional Measures

Exterior Alterations and Water Diversion

Many rising damp issues are caused by incorrect landscaping. Ground levels should be no less than 150mm from the DPC. Our landscaping division will drop the external levels and finish with your choice of materials to provide an attractive outside area that doesn’t cause damp issues in the future.

Water Damage Repair

Water damage repair involves restoring and safeguarding properties by addressing and fixing damage caused by water infiltration, ensuring structural integrity, and preventing future issues.

Client Testimonials

Penetrating Damp occurs when water from outside seeps through the walls, causing damp patches and damage indoors. This is typically due to structural defects like cracks in brickwork, damaged pointing, or faulty gutters and downpipes.

.Condensation damp occurs when moist air hits cooler surfaces like windows, walls, or ceilings, forming water droplets. Causes can be poor ventilation, lifestyle factors or even the building structure.
